Deputy Secretary General Ethan Chow, Class of 2026

Honorable directors, distinguished delegates, student officers, and guests!

My name is Ethan Chow and I am a rising senior at SAS pudong. I am so excited to serve as a member of the executive branch of the SHASMUN XIII secretariat team. This coming year will be my 4th in MUN and I look forward to sharing my expereinces with you, hopefully inspiring in each of you a passion and love for MUN.

At the risk of seeming naive or overly sentimental, I think MUN is more than simply a place for nerdy students to talk and debate, It is a representation of diverse ideas and the competition between which, gleans the best solution. In MUN nothing else matters, only your ideas and the ways in which you present them. My many years in MUN have granted me a clearer, more nuanced understanding of the world; oppertunitites to express and hone my ideasl and a great many dear friends who I would be lesser without.

SHASMUN XIII I hope, represents to you the same excitement and oppertunity that it does for me. My peers and I have have done our utmost to make this experience as rewarding and exciting as possible.

Honourable directors, distinguished delegates, student officers, and guests!

My name is James Yin, and it is my honour to serve as a member of the executive branch of the SHASMUN XIII secretariat team. As a rising senior, although I only have around 3 and a half years of MUN experience, I am nonetheless excited to serve as a member of the SHASMUN XIII secretariat team, and to further my interest in politics and current affairs.

I have always believed that MUN is one of the few environments in which students can geek out, whether it be in roleplaying historical figures in crisis or using rhetoric to attempt to convince the human rights council that you care about human rights as the delegate of the DPRK. MUN for me was a way to deepen and further pursue my interest in politics, and a great way to further my speaking and orating skills. Every conference reminds me that MUN serves to train the next generation of diplomats and leaders.

In the bustling metropolis that is Shanghai, a rare blend of the antiquity of European-style buildings on the bund and the modernity of skyscrapers just across the Huangpu river, I hope that SHASMUN XIII serves as a way to create valuable opportunities for learning and to connect with others. If this is your first conference, I hope that this conference will ignite a passion for the humanities that hopefully never extinguishes.

Secretary General Gina Lin, Class of 2027

Honorable directors, distinguished delegates, student officers, and guests!

My name is Gina Lin and it is my pleasure to serve as your Secretary General in SHASMUN XIII! As a rising junior at Shanghai American School Pudong, this will be my sixth year participating in MUN. SHASMUN was one of the first conferences I attended as a sixth grader and the welcoming community and fruitful discussions it fostered initiated my passion for MUN, which is why I am delighted to be a part of the Secretariat team of SHASMUN XIII.

Since sixth grade, I have always considered MUN one of the most unique and interesting activities at school. Not only was I able to learn more about political science and practice voicing my own opinions, but I was also drawn to the community within MUN. I was able to connect with delegates from other schools and learn from older and more experienced speakers. This welcoming and constructive community made me excited to participate in each conference and has also allowed me to be a better global citizen.

SHASMUN, located at the diverse city of Shanghai, is a perfect place for everyone to explore these opportunities.

As we welcome delegates, student officers, and directors from across China and overseas, we encourage you all to pursue your curiosities and establish lifelong friendships here at SHASMUN. I am excited to welcome all returning and new participants to SHASMUN and hope you all make unforgettable memories here!

Chief Administrative Officer Andrew Liu, Class of 2027

My name is Andrew Liu, a rising junior at SAS Pudong, and it is my upmost honor to serve as your Chief Administrative Officer in SHASMUN XIII! My MUN journey started in high school, making this my third year in this captivating community full of supportive, friendly, and intelligent delegates. Needless to say, SHASMUN holds a special place in my heart; it’s like playing a home game in sports. I am thrilled to present to you the charms of SHASMUN as a member of the SHASMUN XII Secretariat Team!

MUN has been the highlight of my high school career. It gives me a platform to meet amazing delegates who share my passion and inspire me to become a more diplomatic person. On top of heated intellectual debates regarding pressing issues around the world, MUN brings me so much joy in collaborating with others. Overall, MUN has made me a more caring global citizen who is more aware of our world today and has motivated me to be more active in finding solutions to any problem in life. I have also fostered unique friendships in this diverse and welcoming community.

Greetings esteemed chairs, delegates, directors, and staff,

My name is Sophie Jin, a rising sophomore at Shanghai American School Pudong Campus, and it is my utmost honor to serve as your Administrative Officer for SHASMUN XIII.

My MUN career began in 7th grade—back when I was a timid delegate who had no idea what happened in a conference once lobbying ends. Now, after four years of participating in numerous UNA-USA and THIMUN conferences, I still cherish the memories of my earliest MUN experiences, espeically SHASMUN. This was where I first raised my placard in a large-scale committee, where I first became a main submitter, and where I first realized that MUN is more than just “soft” debate: it’s a platform for building connections, engaging in thoughtful discourse, and delving deep into a multitude of socioeconomic and political issues.

That is why I am proud to present to you the thirteenth iteration of SHASMUN. This conference is designed for every delegate—whether you’re a beginner, nervous but excited to explore global issues, or a seasoned delegate seeking a rigorous challenge. Just as SHASMUN ignited my passion years ago, I hope it becomes a similar transformative milestone in your MUN careers. Together, let’s make this conference an unforgettable one.

My name is Kyle Wei, and I am truly honored to serve as an administrative officer at SHASMUN XIII, and this marks my fifth year participating in MUN! SHASMUN was one of the first conferences I attended, and although I was still new to MUN at the time, the insightful debates I witnessed sparked a lasting passion for global dialogue and diplomacy.

Driven by my deep interest in global politics, social studies, and history, MUN has remained my favorite activity throughout high school. While improving key skills such as public speaking, MUN has further connected me to the international community by broadening my understanding of contemporary global matters and deepening my awareness of topics such as human rights, diversity, and globalization, which are all key to our time.

Set in one of the most diverse cities in China, SHASMUN XIII creates an opportunity for delegates across the globe to meet and engage in valuable debate. Like the first conferences I attended, I hope SHASMUN XIII will be just as inspiring for all delegates who attend this conference, where creative yet thoughtful solutions to recent issues are discussed, and meaningful experiences are shared.

Head of Mentorship Owen Wu, Class of 2026

Honorable directors, distinguished delegates, student officers, and esteemed guests,

My name is Owen Wu, and it is my utmost pleasure to serve as the Head of Mentorship for the upcoming SHASMUN XIII! Throughout my 5-year long MUN journey, SHASMUN has been my home; comfort within chaos that often lies in the very essence of MUN. One thing I learned throughout my years is that the first word never comes easy. Whether it’s the first opening speech, the first POI, or the first amendment, even the most decorated delegates have been stumped by such a trivial obstacle. For me, my first word came at SHASMUN Ito in 2020, my first main sub in SHASMUN XI, and for new delegates, I hope SHASMUN XIII can be your first word.

I’ve watched the first word change delegates, who turned their first word into their first dozen, or hundred. After you experienced your first word, you will never look back again. For more experienced delegates, find a first at SHASMUN. A first friend from MUN, a first main sub or best delegate. There is always more you can do.To us, MUN goes beyond speeches and POIs, it’s a journey to find comfort within the discomfort, turning your fear of speech into an insatiable desire to ask another POI.

Mentor Katelyn Jiang, Class of 2027

My name is Katelyn Jiang and it is my pleasure to serve as the secretariat of mentorship for SHASMUN XIII! Although it is only my second year participating in MUN, my interest for political affairs and public speaking stretches way beyond these 2 years. However, I can confidently say that participating in SHASMUN XI is what ignited my passion of MUN forever.

Ever since my first conference, I haven’t been able to find another activity at school that was as enthralling and engaging as MUN. I was drawn to the duality of it: a space that allowed you to voice your outlook on global issues but at the same time pushed you to collaborate and compromise with others. I loved being able to form connections with other delegates and conduct research and debate on various issues I wasn’t even aware of before. These experiences from MUN all aided in a journey that not only allowed me to become a better individual, but most importantly, a better global citizen.

As the secretariat of mentorship, I am overjoyed to have the opportunity at SAS Pudong to carry on the same traditions throughout our MUN community and create learning opportunities for others similar to the ones I received during conferences. I hope that replicating the same welcoming atmosphere and engaging discussions from previous SHASMUN conferences can be a source of great assistance to develop the skills of my peers.
