The Owl of Minerva

The owl of Minerva was the sacred accompaniment of the Roman goddess of wisdom Minerva (Greek goddess Athena). According to German philosopher Hegel,“the owl of Minerva spreads its wings only with the coming of the dusk”. The owl of Minerva is metaphor for how true wisdom, insight, and reflection only come in retrospect, after an event or a period in history has already taken place. While this serves as a reminder for us to learn from history, it is the owl of Minerva’s sharp night-sight that continues after dusk that will guide us forward. The owl of Minerva’s clairvoyance and wisdom is ever important in the rapid-changing present where darkness prevails in the challenges we face.

SHASMUN XIV invites all participants to employ wisdom in the spirit of the owl of Minerva. We encourage delegates to reflect on history before considering the present, to pause and think critically before acting, and to consider long-term implications before opting for short-term resolutions. With the owl of Minerva’s guidance, we look forward to seeing a collection of young, wise minds take off collaboratively into a better future.
